FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Henderson Seniors Reach Out to the City

Remarkable Role Reversal Benefits Henderson Police Department

05/25/2007 --

Henderson, NV-

The City of Henderson needs to put a large fleet of Police and Law Enforcement Vehicles on the streets of the city every day.  This would be an impossible task were it not for the two squads of Patrol Vehicle Attendants that make sure the officers have safe and reliable cars at their disposal every day.  Recently, members of this squad have developed some PC based computer applications to help make this initiative more effective.  Problem was… most of the attendants, themselves seniors returning to the work force, have not had any education or experience using computers.  Solution: the Henderson Seniors’ Auxiliary!  The Henderson Senior Center offers a wide array of nutritional and social services to the senior citizen community of Henderson, including meals-on-wheels and a on-site hot lunch program.  The Auxiliary supports the center’s activities through fundraising and other activities, and normally focuses on seeking support from the city and community to help make these services possible.  In this case, however, they have turned the tables and come forward as a senior resource to support the city.

Recently, B. Gary Beary, a director of the Seniors Auxiliary, volunteered a full day’s training for the Patrol Vehicle Attendants in the City of Henderson.  He demonstrated computer basics as well as the fundamentals of Microsoft Office applications and even consulted on the design of their Vehicle Maintenance program.  These attendants, who have all been invited to join the Henderson Seniors Booster Club were eager students, and, according to Beary, soaked up the material like sponges.  Beary went on to say, “It was so gratifying to see a group of individuals who really approach their duties as a team.  They all helped each other through the educational process, and at the end every one of them was comfortable with the machines and able to function at a level much higher than before.”

Lt. Todd Peters of the Henderson Police department made the initial suggestion to the Henderson Seniors, and secured the classroom facilities.  Peters said that it was great to see our Seniors making a return contribution to the community, and that we should all support the Senior Center’s great work.  Surely there are many other Henderson businesses and agencies that are hiring seniors back into the workforce that could benefit from having them become more computer literate.  Special thanks to Susan Bobby, Gerontology Coordinator for the Henderson Seniors’ Center.  For more information about the center, check www.cityofhenderson.com, and for the Auxiliary, check www.hendersonseniors.org.
